A three-year-old British girl was reported missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on 3 May 2007. The case remains open.
The Murder of Josette Wright
Josette Wright, 12, disappeared from Carmel, Putnam County, New York, on 3 October 1994; her remains were found in Patterson in November 1995. Two men convicted in 1997 were acquitted at retrials in 2016 and 2023. Status: unsolved; case reopened, no one currently charged.
The Murdaugh Murders
Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed at the family's Colleton County property in South Carolina in June 2021. Alex Murdaugh was convicted in 2023, but the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned those convictions on 13 May 2026.
Murder of Laci Peterson
Laci Peterson, 27 and eight months pregnant, disappeared from Modesto, California, on 24 December 2002; her remains were found in April 2003. Husband Scott Peterson was convicted in 2004. Status: convicted, serving life without parole; habeas petition denied April 2026, appeal announced.
Disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh
A London estate agent disappeared on 28 July 1986 after leaving to meet a client. She was declared dead in 1994; no charges have been brought.
Death of Gabby Petito
A 22-year-old woman was reported missing during a cross-country trip and found dead in Wyoming in September 2021. The named suspect died before charges were tried.
