On the night of 19 February 2007, 15-year-old Carly Ryan was killed; her body was found the next morning at Horseshoe Bay, Port Elliot, South Australia. Garry Francis Newman, who groomed her online as teenage musician Brandon Kane and used his then-juvenile son for video and phone calls, was convicted of murder in the Supreme Court of South Australia with that son as co-accused. The jury acquitted the son of murder and manslaughter; Newman's identity may be published, but the son's remains suppressed. Newman was sentenced to life with a 29-year non-parole period. His appeal was dismissed in April 2011. The case informed online-safety reforms known as Carly's Law.
