On Halloween eve 30 Oct 1975, 15-year-old Martha Elizabeth Moxley was beaten to death with a golf club in Belle Haven, Greenwich, Connecticut; her body was found the next day on Moxley property. After a decades-long investigation, neighbor Michael Skakel — a nephew of Ethel Skakel Kennedy — was convicted of murder in 2002 and sentenced to 20 years to life. Connecticut courts later vacated that conviction for ineffective assistance of counsel, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to revive it, and on 30 Oct 2020 prosecutors said they would not retry the case. As of 30 Oct 2020, Skakel had no standing conviction for the killing; Martha’s family has continued to say they believe he was responsible.
