Tess Richey, 22, was killed in Toronto’s Church–Wellesley neighbourhood early on 25 November 2017 after a night out. She was last seen entering a laneway with Kalen Schlatter, who left alone about forty-five minutes later. Her mother found her body on 29 November at an outdoor stairwell. Schlatter was arrested in February 2018 and convicted by a jury of first-degree murder in March 2020. The jury found a sexual assault and killing were part of the same series of events. He received life imprisonment with no parole eligibility for 25 years. The Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed his conviction appeal in January 2024, and the Supreme Court of Canada later refused leave.
